Killarney Community Ice Rink: Colorful Glass Provides Dazzling Contrast to White Ice

Share

One of the legacies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics is the stunning new community rink at the Killarney Community Centre in Vancouver, BC. The rink was used for short-track speed skating training sessions during the 2010 Winter Games and has recently undergone conversion to accommodate community recreation use.

The project features a variety of custom laminated IMPACT by Lami Glass standard and clerestory windows featuring Vanceva® Color by Saflex®. The band of narrow windows strategically placed around the perimeter of the ice rink is a very effective way of bringing natural daylight into the inner space of the arena without distracting views or compromising privacy. The vivid Vanceva® Color product not only provides a striking contrast to the white ice, the relatively high transparency also allows athletes and spectators to see the sky. The result is an enclosed yet open-feeling space that provides a rose-colored peek at the world outside 365 days a year.

Parkhaus Berlin Auto Garage, Berlin, Germany

Architect: Kny & Weber, Berlin
Laminator: Thiele-Glaswerke, Wermsdorf
Building Owner: Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Berlin-Mitte

The parking garage is located in the Rathausstraße at close quarters to the “red guildhall”, at the foot of the television tower and just a few steps away from the popular Alexanderplatz.

In old Berlin, this area always had the character of a turning platform for tens of thousands using the suburban railway and their ways crossing at this point every day. Numerous places of interest are nearby, like the Nikolaiviertel, the Gendarmenmarkt or the famous avenue “Unter den Linden”.

The architecture firm Kny & Weber was assigned to carry out the planning for both parking garages and the bordering block of offices. The main focus of the architects was put on the functional arrangement of the parking garage under the best possible utilization of the existing areas as a parking areal, guaranteeing harmonic integration of the shopping arcades and a seamless affiliation of the office block.

The building accommodates seven fashion shops, two cafes, one bakery, two fast food restaurants, one ice shop, one Italian restaurant, seven one-line businesses with various offers, one supermarket, one bowling alley, one pharmacy, one telephone shop, one kiosk, one hairdresser, one travel agency, one tanning salon, one post office and two surgeries. That results in 32 one-line businesses overall.

The facade of the parking garage is very expressive and colourful. Having had the help of the Vanceva® sample board, the facade was assembled out of numerous colouring tones. These colours ease and relax the appearance of the parking garage which are quite miserable in usual.

Bar of Condominium: Lustrous Laminated Glass Shines in Unique Spaces

Share

View Bar of Condominum Project Profile

All audiences are welcome in this Bar of Condominium, where laminated glass accentuates both the light and the dark elements in the design of two very different spaces. The dark tones of one room appeal to more conservative residents seeking a place to quietly socialize with friends, while the lighter space is tailored to an edgy, sophisticated public. A glass bar not only divides the two rooms, but also unites the contrasting color palettes with its black-and-white glass lining.

Wallpaper in shades of gold and silver heightens this difference and also adds polish and shine to both spaces. Architect Brunete Fraccaroli says of the project, “The concept of the space is reflected in its boldness, dynamism, and above all, elegance.”

Sustainability was also a key concept of the design. The architect created a display of 4,600 recycled bottles on the back wall of the bar, endeavoring to prove that “environmentally friendly materials can be used with elegance and sophistication.”
